Le WAX ?

It's ... an African fabric !

But ultimately, what do we really know ?

Where does its name come from? ? Its original motifs - sometimes humorous, almost disturbing – and do its bright colors have any special meaning ? Or, how and by whom are they made ?

To be precise, we are first talking about the WAX "loincloth". The loincloth designates a rectangle of 5,40 m x 1,20 m of fabric.

Formerly, it was more like a garment, then nowadays, it is more used for making clothes, household linen, accessories and upholstery.

Loincloth comes from the Spanish "paño" itself inherited from Latin, pannus "piece of cloth". The "WAX" loincloth (which means "wax" in English) is a cotton fabric, to which a hydrophobic wax is applied (which repels water), is strongly inspired by Javanese batiks.

Wax WOODIN is a very high quality fabric, made by industrial partners from West Africa (Ivory Coast, Ghana).

In Ivory Coast, the WAX WOODIN loincloth helps to affirm the social and cultural identity of women, and, for who knows how to decipher them, conveys messages on daily events, in particular.

A wide range of vibrant colors and patterns are available and print qualities can vary widely depending on the origin. Among these different models, the Beaurepaire house offers – among others – loincloths of the brand "WOODIN". Its small geometric patterns are very popular with Westerners who are sometimes still quite reluctant to use large, more colorful patterns., offered by other brands.

For a room of approximately 1,20 m x 1,80 m, count around 40 €.

The fabric pieces are offered for sale, but can also be used, according to your tastes, for tailor-made clothing, offered by Maison BEAUREPAIRE in its shop.

100 % Cotton, their quasi-water-repellent function makes them the ideal fabric for tailoring, jackets, evening wear as well as for fine linens.
